Power of Attorney, DNR, Living Will
Power of Attorney
The Power of Attorney is the mother of all legal documents related to your care of your aging parents. In fact, you might never actually need it. Before making any decisions about power of attorney, make an appointment with your family lawyer if you have one. With power of attorney, you can make any decision on behalf of your parents. ANY DECISION.
The saying goes, "absolute power corrupts absolutely" so use this with care.
Medical Power of Attorney
While full Power of Attorney may be well beyond what is needed related to your parents care, Medical Power of Attorney is almost a necessity. Hopefully you parents will continue to age, go about average illnesses and eventually pass on to the next life. More than likely, a medical trauma will happen. (STATS?). Should your parent have a stroke, encounter side effects from medication or medical procedure or succumb to dementia or Alzheimer's, Medical Power of Attorney becomes very important: It allows you to make decisions concerning your parents care on their behalf.
